Welcome to the Center for Indigenous and Cultural Psychology (CICP)
Welcome to the Center for Indigenous and Cultural Psychology (CICP) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Indonesia. As the newly appointed Director, I am honored to lead a platform dedicated to the scientific exploration of the human mind and behavior within the rich tapestry of Indonesian indigenous contexts.
Our work is grounded in the principle that psychological research and theories should be rooted in the cultural, ecological, and historical realities of the communities they serve. Indigenous psychology, as we advocate, is not merely an academic discipline but a commitment to developing universally applicable psychological science that respects and integrates the local knowledge, values, and beliefs of diverse societies.
The journey of indigenous psychology, inspired by the challenges faced in applying Western-centric psychological frameworks to Indonesian contexts, underscores the urgency for a psychology that is valid, universal, and culturally attuned. We question the presumed universality of existing psychological theories and aim to forge a path toward a science of psychology that is genuinely global yet locally relevant.
In embracing the complexities of cultural specifics, our center aims to contribute to a psychological science that is not only systematic and comprehensive but also deeply interwoven with the social, cultural, and ecological fabric of the communities we study. Our vision is thus to explore the psychological dynamics of Indonesian society. By doing so, we seek to co-create knowledge with those with lived experiences in order to produce knowledge that is accessible, relevant and contextual.
Join us in advancing a field that recognizes the inseparable bond between psychology and Indonesian culture, and in striving for a discipline that is both theoretically robust and empirically rich, reflecting the diverse realities of human experience.
