The Center for Indigenous and Cultural Psychology (CICP) at Gadjah Mada University held the 3rd Angkringan Workshop titled “Communal Sharing as the Foundation for Youth Solidarity Actions” on Wednesday, May 8, 2024. The workshop featured speaker Melani Jayanti, M.A., a member of the Pesantren Research Group, to present research findings and interesting discoveries related to the process of forming solidarity within youth organizations and the dynamics of intragroup relations within them.

The event was opened with a presentation from Ms. Melani, who explained the context and reasons for conducting the research, followed by the process of carrying it out. She explained that in Yogyakarta, where disasters often occur, young people proactively form solidarity by utilizing their resources to help each other. She believes that solidarity is a common act of collective coping in response to a crisis such as a disaster, thus it would be interesting to examine it in the long term. Along with her research team, she then examined how the process of solidarity formation occurs and what kind of actions emerge from it. The research then found that through solidarity, communities were formed and numerous activities were done, such as teaching young people impacted by the disaster. All of the activities were carried out voluntarily and without seeking personal gain. These findings support the notion that Indonesians, particularly young people, are far from indifferent.

This workshop aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDGs are a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations to address pressing challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice. Specifically, the workshop supports: Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – By highlighting how young people in Yogyakarta respond to disasters through collective action, the event underscores the importance of building resilient communities. Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions – The research on youth solidarity actions contributes to fostering inclusive societies that are equipped to handle crises through cooperation and mutual support. Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals – The emphasis on communal sharing and voluntary action demonstrates the power of collaboration in achieving sustainable development.

The workshop was then continued with QnA session and was wrapped up with reflection from one of the participants. Through this workshop, CICP hoped to educate and spread awareness on the importance of solidarity especially during a crisis. We look forward to delivering more interesting events and workshops.
